HOW DOES IT WORK?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable that improves the appearance of double chins caused by weight gain, genetics, and aging. Kybella is a man-made form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring material that helps the body absorb fat. Treatment with Kybella is fast, requires little downtime, and destroys fat cells permanently.

Kybella destroys the membranes of the cells that store fat.  Once these cells are destroyed, they can no longer store fat. The body’s natural healing and elimination processes take over, and in about four to six weeks, your fat deposits are dramatically reduced or eliminated.

In clinical trials used by the FDA, even those patients who gained weight after Kybella injectables did not see their fatty areas return.

WHAT ALTERNATIVES ARE THERE?

The other alternative to a non injectable treatment yet still permanent fat removal is Coolsculpting. First things first: CoolSculpting is described as a “fat-freezing fat reduction” procedure. It’s noninvasive and has very little downtime. Scientifically known as cryolipolysis, the process involves using a vacuum-like applicator to suction targeted areas of fat. Then it deep-freezes your fat cells, which eventually causes them to die and be naturally expelled via your lymphatic system. Yes, it is exactly as it sounds!

A difference you can find between CoolSculpting and Kybella is that it is actually difficult to be considered a “good” candidate for CoolSculpting especially for the chin because there has to be enough fat or surface area for the CoolSculpting applicator to suction to. Kybella can treat even very small pockets of fat that Coolsculpting can’t reach.

HOW DOES IT FEEL?

Now the swelling you’ll experience is no joke. You will quite literally resemble a bullfrog following treatment, Swelling typically peaks at 24 hours post-treatment and will decrease gradually after this time. Swelling can last from two days to three weeks. Although intimidating, swelling is actually a good thing and means that swelling in potential future treatments won’t be as extreme!

There may also be bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness (which can feel lumpy, or like small nodules, caused by swelling) in the treatment area. All of these should be temporary.
